I went to a funeral recently and we were each given a pack of wild poppy seeds to scatter wherever we wanted - more in the spirit of life-affirming remembrance than a recognition of sacrifice.

Actually the red poppy became a symbol of remembrance due to its mention in the poem In Flanders Fields by John McCrae, inspired by the flowers growing on WWI battlefields.
